The Trouble With Katie Rogers

Back in 2008 I let you in on The Trouble With Katie Rogers - a comic strip devised by illustrator and all-round impresario Des Taylor. Heck, I even got to interview Katie herself.

Then Des was kind enough to ask me to contribute my styling nous to a spread in an the upcoming Katie Rogers novel. I shame to say this was published in 2009 and I am only getting around to putting it online. It's my declining brain. If I don't do things asap, my short term memory takes an extended vay-cay. I refuse to call it my age; instead I call it my pace. I am paced out (and in denial).

Anyhoo, take a peek at the goods below or check out the Katie Rogers blog. Fancy seeing more? CLICK HERE...

Belated Thanks...

to RTE.ie for including me in their Top 20 Irish Style Stars and to the Irish Examiner for covering it in the paper.

In Store @ Siopella

My consignment at Siopella has selling like hotcakes. So if you're looking for good-as-new pre-loved designer and highstreet fare, be sure to pay a visit to the Temple Lane South HQ in Dublin.

99% of the things I'm selling have been impulse buys or online purchases I've worn once (maybe twice). Now that I've vowed to my feet to wear lower shoes, all of my vertiginous foot candy is also up for grabs. Below is a small precis (of what I can remember) from my wardrobe cull:

Sold: Fly Now jacket, Acne dress, Natasha Stolle tuxedo coat, Anglomania and Irregular Choice shoes.

In store: Paul & Joe old school jacket, Gestuz fur gilet, Schuh boots, Asos.com shoes, Selected Femme scarf, Bershka leather jacket, Camilla Norrback trousers.

Still to come: Rick Owens Lillies dress, Aquascutum shirt, Kurt Geiger boots.

CLICK HERE for more info on Siopella or check them out on FACEBOOK and TWITTER.

Time Keeps on Slipping Slipping Slipping...

The fact that I'm referencing Steve Miller should be a subtle indication of my actual age (as opposed to my playing age which still hovers at 29). With that, I'm glad I've got this new Michael Kors watch to keep an eye on the slippery beast that is time.

For instance, there's a nasty rumour circulating that today is my birthday. Pah! Try telling that to the portrait in my attic.

But seriously, if time is taking me hostage, I may as well channel my inner Patty Hearst (minus the AK-47) and embrace the closet rebel. I always thought I'd look good in a beret.Oh, the delicious prospect of ageing disgracefully!

Army Gilet

I bought an army gilet in Zara today to add to my de facto battalion of army-inspired separates: jackets, shirts, coats, parkas... you name it. Sometimes if I stand really still in my back garden, I can't be found. Just as well I'm an indoors kind of gal. Back on topic - I've been subjecting new purchases to rigorous tests so as not to incur the wrath of buyer's remorse. I'm happy to say that this little wardrobe staple already works three different ways. Behold the results of the Kimmage jury and apologies for my dodgy iPhone skills. For a more professional shots and a cool little post on military jackets, take a wander over to WhatSheWears.ie.

Look 1
Do urban preppy with a Breton top, biker jacket and ripped jeans.

Tip: Swap the boots for white Converse to 'clean' it up a bit.

Look 2
Layer over a silk tank and outre maxi skirt for downtown glamour.
A chunky man's watch or a textured cuff (this one is salmon skin) toughens it up.

Look 3
Combine denim and leather for contrasting textures.
Add concealed wedge sneakers for daytime appeal.

Rainkoat Reiki

I went to Rainkoat Reiki to help manage my stress levels. I had been suffering from insomnia, shortness of breath and bruxism which were affecting my well-being. Karoona, my friend and practice founder, suggested I do the 5-session package toget the maximum benefit out of the healing.

Having been to Karoona for individual sessions before, I understood how powerful even one attunement could be. The prospect, therefore, of five weeks of Reiki was a welcome one.

The progress I made from my first to my final session was immense: both physically and emotionally. During my initial session, I felt intensely relaxed as if my whole body was magnetised to the bed. The jumpiness I felt from my elbows to my fingers and from my knees to my toes were energy blockages making their way through the body; much like my grumbling stomach which was the repository of my pent-up emotions.
The after-effects were equally enlightening. I experienced a ‘healing crisis’, which involved a lot of sleeping, feeling on the cusp of flu and a bit weepy. This is perfectly normal, Karoona assured me, and something to be welcomed, as the Reiki rids ‘the issues in your tissues’. She was right.

My worries, fears and anxieties gradually lost their sway over me. I felt more tranquil with each attunement and subsequently more in control. My reactions to typical stressors began to shift, along with my perspective on life.  As a result, my physical stress symptoms abated. The most profound part of Reiki for me is ironically its subtlety. Rather than simply leaving your relaxed in the moment, it accompanies you long after the session has ended. I can’t recommend it more.

Past It? Past What?: Age and Its Detractors

I’m an organised soul. Every now and again however, the planets go retrograde and...BAM-O!...my desk looks like an homage to the anti-bin charge brigade. Then my brain short circuits and I am unable to find basic necessities like keys or my face.  I believe my American brethren call this ‘a hot mess’. I haven’t quite stooped to eating Tayto out of an old sock and muttering about Banshees infiltrating my back garden (that would be far too poetic); rather my altered state is of a more prosaic variety. Last week I managed to lose my make-up brushes and my big furry parka; this week I’ve taken to writing notes on my hand, despite having an iPad, so as not to forget what I’m supposed to remember to do. I believe this is referred to as ‘the slippery slope’ or ‘past it’. Given my 39th birthday is but an atrophied brain cell away, I’ve already started fretting about what I’ll be passing on my precarious descent. Youth, lithe limbs, wanton one-night stands, too high heels, taut skin, perky boobs, a blasé attitude to mini-skirts? This I pondered while purchasing a bottle of Trilogy rosehip oil antioxidant+ in the health food store.  I cast my mind back to my uni days and certainly don’t recall fisherman’s rib sweaters, college bar pints and diffuser-dried hair the heady content of Halcyon bliss. Sure, my 20s were a riot but they were also freezing.  Dear God, it was Galway in the `90s. I didn’t realise I had a pair of legs until the Celtic Tiger hit and Ireland discovered central heating. The conclusion that here and now is a rockin’ place seems, however, to have had a Zen-like effect on my grey matter. Immigrant items have been repatriated and feverish 'to do' notes remain in my head. Now it’s just a question of relocating Mr. Scruff. Something tells me he’s swapped Hibernia for a few months in the Med. Clever cat.

SHOW//METAL

To show your mettle = a person’s ability to cope well with difficulties using spirit and resilience.
Seized guns and weapons in Manchester have been melted and turned into a designer jewellery and clothing range: SHOW//METAL.
The range was the brain child of Salford University Art Lecturers, Paul Haywood and Sam Ingleson. They began working alongside Manchester Metropolitan’s Xcalibre Task Force in 2009 to find a way to melt seized guns, knives and replica arms and re-cast it into high-fashion products. Enlisting the help of up-and-coming North London fashion designer, Josie Beckett, the SHOW//METAL range of t-shirts and jewellery.
£5 of every online SHOW//METAL sale goes directly to fund arts and enterprise activities with young people from communities affected by gun crime. In addition, each garment will carry a limited edition SHOW//METAL tag made from 100% recycled gun metal.
